How We Review Burial Insurance Companies
Before you trust a review, you deserve to know how it was written — and who is behind it.
We review burial insurance and final expense companies to help you make one of the more important money decisions of your life. Here is exactly how we do it, where our information comes from, and how we get paid — in plain English, with nothing hidden.
Who writes these reviews
Every review on this site is written and checked by Phillip Chin, an independent, licensed insurance broker who has helped families find coverage since 2008 (National Producer Number 8895251). He is not an anonymous writer or an outside content team — he actually submits these applications and has seen, first-hand, which companies approve which people and which ones do not.
You can read more about Phillip on our about page, or confirm his license on our licenses and verification page.
How we score each company
We look at four things that actually matter to a real buyer — not a company’s advertising budget.
1. Who actually gets approved
The most important question is a simple one: can you get covered? We look at how each company handles health conditions, medications, and age, whether there is a waiting period, and how often people are turned down. A cheap policy is worthless if you cannot qualify for it.
2. The real price for the coverage
We use live quotes and current rate information — not the numbers from a television commercial. Two companies can offer the same $10,000 policy at very different prices, and we tell you which one tends to cost less for people in your age range.
3. An honest look at who it fits
Every review says plainly who a company is good for — and who should look somewhere else. If a company is a poor fit for your situation, we would rather tell you than sell you the wrong thing.
4. Financial strength and track record
We stick to established, A-rated carriers and note each company’s history, including complaints and how it treats policyholders. The company you choose has to be around — and pay the claim — when your family needs it.
We work for you, not the insurance company
We are an independent brokerage. That means we are not owned by any one insurance company, and we are not paid to push a particular brand. We compare many A-rated carriers and recommend the one that fits you best.
Here is the part most sites will not say out loud: the insurance company pays us a commission when a policy is issued, the same as it would any agent — and you pay no broker fee. Your rate is the same whether you come through us or go direct. Because we are not tied to one company, we have no reason to steer you wrong, and we will gladly point you to a competitor when they are the better choice for your health or your budget.
Where our information comes from
Our reviews are built from sources we can stand behind:
- Live carrier quotes and current rate information for real ages and health classes.
- Each company’s own underwriting guides — the rules that decide who gets approved.
- Independent financial-strength ratings, such as AM Best.
- Public funeral-cost data from the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) and state consumer resources.
- Real client cases — the applications we actually place. You can read a few of these, fully anonymized, in our client case studies.
We keep our reviews current
Rates change, and so do the rules companies use to approve people. We revisit our reviews and update them when something important changes, and each one shows when it was last checked. If you ever spot something out of date, tell us and we will fix it.
See the reviews for yourself
You can browse every company we have reviewed on our company reviews page. A good place to start is our review of American-Amicable, one of the carriers we reach for most often when someone has a health condition other companies decline.

This page describes how we research and write our reviews. It is general information, not a recommendation of any specific policy. Approvals and rates depend on your full health picture and the carrier.
